We have now visted all of the villages in Dordogne having the 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France' status. We have also explored many more beautiful villages and towns. They all have there own characteristics so suggesting 'any one', is very dificulty. This list are some of our favorites places that we have visited at least two or three times. the suggestions that follow are in no particular order.

Highlights and facilities

  • Attractive church makes for some excellent photos.
  • Lovely pond with fountain, fish and ducks to feed.
  • Enough shops and restaurants for me!
  • Ample free parking with toilets (bonus!!!) opposite.
  • Old mill and weir offers a nice photo oportunity.
  • Observe some lovely views of the Vézère from the public footbridge.
  • Endless riverside walks and plenty of nature to spot.
  • The adward winning village of Limeuil is close by.
  • Charming, and relatively quiet, backstreets to explore.

Family attractions & activities

  • Parc Le Bournat - a theme park which recreates 19th century village life in France.
  • Big Bird - the first aerial and urban course in France, more than 22 meters high!
  • Aquarium de Périgord Noir - the largest private freshwater aquarium in Europe.
  • Labyrinthe Préhistorique - explore and learn about caveman, then navigate the labyrinth of mirrors.
  • Jungle Golf - an excellent and fun crzy golf course.
  • Canoe Hire - CANOEric, located opposite Parc Le Bournat. 8 different trips (from 5 to 26 km).
  • Musee de Mineralogie et Paleontologie - Fossils, rocks and minerals etc.
  • Les Sangliers de Mortemart - more than 500 wild boars of all ages on 40 hectares of forest.

Positives

  • Lots of attractions and activities for children and adults alike.
  • Mostly flat so suitable for all ages and abilities.

Negatives

  • Due to the amount of attractions in one place, it can get quite busy in peak hours.
  • The main high street has traffic passing through it.
  • Parking at 'Univerland' can get busy in July and August, so arrive early (for the best spaces).

Our tips

If you do not fancy dining out, then there are plenty of shady grassy areas, scattered tables and benches where you can eat your picnic.

Other things to see and/or do in the area

  • Expolre Limeuil, a medieval hilltop village and its boutiques.
